Our Workshop
We are a small family run business. We do everything the old way, by hand.
And this is how we do it.

Believe it or not I started this business in a one room apartment in New York in september of 2001 and this one table was all I had to work with. I've always believed in customer support, and in working for a living. Providing a good product at a reasonable price and selling lots. Rather then over pricing everything to get rich quick at the customers expense.
Since opening the business our customers have been more then great, and my little business has grown substantially as you'll see below. Mostly thanks to our wonderful customers

Our shop now, and its many work areas

This is our cutting table, where all leather items start. The first step is cutting a hide down to a size that will fit on the table, then this table is used to cut the hide into nice straight usable strips.
The table is 12 feet long, the average hide is about 10 feet, so occasionally the table is barely long enough.
Below the table is our leather storage area, above is where we store exotic hides like shark, deer, snake, etc.
and at the end you'll notice our boxes, this table often doubles as our shipping table.
Like most everything in our shop this table is something we designed, it allows us to cut 10' long hides into any width straps we need, up to 6 1" straps or 4 2" straps can be cut at the same time, thus increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
On the back wall you'll notice our patterns, again these allow us to produce nice items, by hand, efficiently.

Taking a closer look at the cutting table you'll find that our lash cutter also resides here. This little device allows us to cut 10 1/4" lashes or 5 1/2" lashes at a time, Larger ones are done on the cutting table.

Next, most items find themselves at one of our work tables. They may not look like much, but these tables are the heart of our operation. they are setup so everything needed to complete a job is close at hand. including instruction manuals, Safety glasses, and dust masks. We firmly believe in being as safe as possible, and I think everyone should.
The closest table is my table. This is where most new items are designed, and where all custom items are produced. unfortunately the business end usually keeps me busy and I get very little work done in the shop.
The far off table is Julie's table. This is where most of the work is actually done, everything from floggers to slings usually come from this table, and are usually made by Julie. Julie is a very important part of the business as she produces most everything, and she is my sister.
And between them is a heavy solid steel table, the top of this table weighs in at about 200 pounds, and allows us to set rivets very fast by providing a large solid surface to beat on. Julie found this table at a yard sale and brought it to work in her convertible, I still can't believe she did that to her car.

The wood working area. This is the newest addition to our shop.
It has everything needed to produce our furniture items fast, and right, all in one area.
Again this is something we designed specifically to make the items we produce.
On one side you'll find the cutoff saw. We don't measure anything with this saw, the saw table can be set to any measurement we need and then it will cut every board put in it at the exact same measurement.
On the other side you'll find our jig. The jig has all the right corners for putting our furniture together, it insures that everything is nice and square and it also accepts our furniture patterns, stored overhead
This area is still in the works and we are still learning to fully utilize it.

Lets not forget old faithful. This sewing machine is so old that parts for it no longer exists but we keep a few old machines around to steal parts from. This is an old sears, kenmore machine with a lot of modifications inside and out to make it work with leather.
We've tried new machines but they never seem to have the power needed to handle heavy leathers, this machine has an external motor with a belt drive. with the modifications it has the power and ability to do the job we need it to do. Eventually we may retire it but I don't know. why fix something thats not broken?
Behind the sewing machine you'll see our metal working area, with our grinder, drill press, and other miscellaneous tools.

Throughout the shop is many little devices we use. our plaiting stand is one of these. We do our plaiting the same way its been done for ages. the handle is attached to the stand, you sit down and sometime later you have finished plaiting a handle. Its a slow meathod but it is the way plaiting is supposed to be done, by hand.
Machines are great for some things, but knowing something was made by a person, one strand at a time makes it special, and some things are just meant to be special.

And last but not least there is the office.
They say "behind every good man is a good woman" and you better believe there is one behind me.
Besides being a wonderful wife and my driving force, starla has a great mind for business. she does nearly all of our customer support, billing, taxes, etc, etc. and shes really good at keeping me organized. I could have never built our business to this point without her full support. starla is a special kind of woman, the kind that knows how to question me, but more importantly, knows how to be quiet and support my efforts even when I'm making a mistake

This concludes the tour of our shop.
I would like to take a second to thank our customers who have allowed my little one table shop to grow into the business it has become today, and what it will be tomorrow.
Thank You for visiting our shop, I hope you will be one of the customers who will help us to build an even bigger business in the future. We always try to give something back to the community, we always try to keep our prices as low as possible, and our quality as high as possible. We can only do this with the support of our customers.
